A 33-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after a serious assault on a town high street.
Police said the victim, a man in his 20s, was left with potentially life-changing injuries following the attack on the High Street in Wincanton, Somerset, on Sunday morning.
Avon and Somerset Police said they were called to the scene at 09:28 GMT.
The arrested man remains in police custody. The force said it does not believe there is a wider risk to the public and will be patrolling in the area over the next few days.
Police are asking anyone with information to come forward.
Neighbourhood Sgt Simon Lancey said: "This incident is understandably concerning but we do believe it to be one that involved people known to each other and there is not believed to be any risk to the wider public.
"Officers will be carrying out increased high visibility patrols in the area over the coming days and if you have any concerns then please do speak to them."
