Wind farm plans raise aviation radar concerns

The plans would see 87 wind turbines constructed off the coast of Maughold

Concerns have been raised in a public consultation about the impact of a proposed wind farm on aviation radar systems.
The government received 447 responses to its consultation on energy firm Orsted's Mooir Vannin project, which would see 87 wind turbines built off the coast of Maughold.
While supporters cited its positive step towards net zero and economic benefits, there were concerns over navigational and visual impacts.
The UK's Ministry of Defence (MOD) objected to the proposals, stating it would have a "significant and detrimental impact on the effective operation and capability of the air traffic control radar at British Aerospace Warton", based in Lancashire.

The wind farm would be located between six and 12 nautical miles (11.1 to 22.2km) off Maughold
Douglas City Council has supported the proposals, citing potential economic benefits and job creation for younger people, provided sea routes remain protected.
Garff Commissioners and Ramsey Commissioners objected, raising concerns about visual, environmental and navigational impacts, and possible effects on fishing.
Environmental organisations, such as Manx Wildlife Trust, Manx BirdLife and Manx Nature Alliance, warned of risks to species and habitats despite supporting renewable energy goals.
The Council of Ministers has referred the application to an independent examining body, which will review responses, assess issues and set the examination procedure.
The panel will advise whether Marine Infrastructure Consent should be granted, with the statutory process expected to take 130 working days.
