A council has warned of disruption for eight weeks as work to replace an area of defective sewage network begins.

West Sussex County Council said the work at the Muster Green gyratory system, in Haywards Heath, will address the known flooding problems in the area.

Access to Muster Green North, Muster Green South and Boltro Road will be restricted at various points until 24 October.

The council said residents could still get to their properties, the library and Haywards Heath Town Council, but there might be minor disruption and increased noise.

A new drainage network will be built beneath the roads and additional gullies installed above ground.

Work is taking place in Boltro Road until 3 October, in Muster Green North from 22 September to 10 October and in Muster Green South from 6 October to 24 October.

Diversions will be in place notifying motorists when they should use an alternative route.

An underground rainwater storage tank will also be installed beneath Muster Green.

A council spokesperson said: "Muster Green is both a conservation area and a busy transport hub.

"We will let residents know when parts of the green will need to be closed for a short while during the works.

"We apologise for the temporary inconvenience these essential works to the drainage network will cause.

"They are necessary to provide long-term improvements to flood risk resilience in Haywards Heath."
