Why power lines might scare wildlife

Animals around the world could be scared away from power cables because they give off UV flashes invisible to humans, say scientists.

Researchers, who studied several species' vision to discover this UV sensitivity, say this flashing could divide habitat and disrupt migration.

The flashes, or coronas as they are known, occur when charge builds up in a cable and is released into the air.

This footage, captured with a UV-sensitive camera, reveals the flashes of light that may be visible to many animals. And lead researcher on the study, Prof Glen Jeffery from University College London, explains why these flashes of light occur.
