Potash in the limelight as food prices soar

As food prices soar again, the demand for fertiliser and the companies that produce it is rising.

BHP Billiton's $40bn hostile bid for Canada's PotashCorp has catapulted potash to the centre stage in the debate about food security.

Russia's Silvinit, which is based in the region of Perm, is one of the world's biggest producers.

There is growing concern from large consumers of potash such as China that ever fewer companies could corner ever more of the global potash market, and push up prices.
