Syria seeks oil alternatives as supplies fall

In the mid-90s, Syria's oil industry was in full-swing, producing as much as 600,000 barrels a day, but since then, production has been in decline.

There have been signs of improvement in recent months, as Syria has signed deals with neighbouring Iraq to build and transfer Iraqi oil and gas through Syria and that could help increase supply.

But Syria's energy demand outstrips domestic supply and the government is now looking into alternative policies to generate power.
