Toyota to reduce UK output due to earthquake

The car manufacturer Toyota is cutting production at its UK plant to a day-and-a-half a week from next month.

The company was forced to review operations at its plant in Burnaston, Derbyshire, because of supply problems in Japan.

It follows last month's earthquake and tsunami which affected electronic component manufacturers.

Staff will still be paid but will have to work back the hours when the problems are resolved.

The deputy managing director of Toyota Motor Europe, Tony Walker, says staff appreciate that the measures are probably only temporary.
