Microsoft buys internet phone service Skype for $8.5bn

Microsoft says it will take over internet telephone company Skype. It has confirmed it will buy the firm for just over $8.5bn (£5.2bn).

The company says Skype's technology and 170 million users will help Microsoft's push into video and mobile communication.
