Ben Bernanke: US recession 'deeper than thought'

US Federal Reserve chairman Ben Bernanke has said the recession there was "even deeper and the recovery weaker than we had previously thought".

Speaking ahead of a major speech from President Obama on plans to stem unemployment, Mr Bernanke would not be drawn on whether the Fed would take steps to help boost the flatlining US economy.
