Kuwait's nuclear power dilema

With growing power demands from its booming population, Kuwait suffers chronic energy shortages particularly in the summer months.

In a bid to solve this, the government had planned to turn to nuclear energy until Japan's Fukushima crisis prompted Kuwait to scrap plans to build four nuclear reactors.

The decision was welcomed by opponents who said Kuwait's limited landmass meant disposing of waste materials would be both dangerous and expensive.

But with neighbouring countries UAE and Iran both embarking on nuclear energy programmes, can Kuwait afford not to join the pack?
