Vince Cable condemns Beecroft report's sacking plans

Business Secretary Vince Cable has risked exposing divisions within the coalition by condemning a proposal to make it easier for firms to fire under-performing staff.

The proposal is made in a report, commissioned by the prime minister and compiled by venture capitalist Adrian Beecroft, which is due to be published later on Monday.

The report is seeking ways to boost the UK's businesses and has the backing of many Tory MPs.

Mr Cable told the BBC that while he backed many aspects of the report, the proposal about firing workers was "the wrong approach".
