Should shark fins be on the menu?

A major wildlife convention is currently under way in Bangkok and one of the talking points is scheduled to focus on how to save endangered shark species.

Delegates at the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) are considering adding more shark species to its endangered species list.

Currently the trade of three types of shark - the great white, basking and whale shark - is regulated under the convention.

Activists say the number of sharks is rapidly declining because of the growing appetite of the Chinese for shark fins, a delicacy in the Chinese cuisine.

However, shark fin traders deny these allegations and claim that anti-shark fin campaigns have hurt their trade.
