Edinburgh pandas: 'Lights off' policy to encourage mating

Edinburgh Zoo's giant pandas Tian Tian and Yuan Guang are still waiting to be introduced to each other to mate, zookeepers have said.

Panda experts from China and Germany are monitoring the behaviour of the female Tian Tian, to identify her annual 36-hour mating window.

Last year the pandas were introduced to each other several times but did not mate.

Panda breeding levels in captivity are notoriously low, but Rachel Goddard from Edinburgh Zoo told BBC Radio 5 live Breakfast that they would attempt artificial insemination if they did not breed naturally.
