Hong Kong shops try to woo protesters

Tens of thousands of people are expected to take to the streets in Hong Kong on Monday on what is the 16th anniversary of the city's return to China on Monday.

Residents will be protesting against the lack of universal voting rights there.

But for the first time, some of Hong Kong's retailers, restaurants and even massage parlours will be offering a city-wide sale to coincide directly with the protest.

Some people have said the businesses are siding with the authorities, hoping to attract people to the shops rather than protest on the streets.

But businesses say they are trying to increase trade on what is traditionally a quiet trading day.
