Poorer people hit hardest by bank branch closures

Nearly 7,500 bank and building society branches closed in the period from 1989 to 2012, according to a report by the University of Nottingham.

Speaking on BBC Breakfast, one of the report's authors Shaun French said: "There's been a disproportionate concentration of closures in the least affluent inner city and traditional manufacturing areas of the UK."

He added that the most vulnerable elderly people and those on lower incomes found it harder to cope with closures as they struggled to switch to internet banking.
