Why smartphones and tablets could get more expensive

Your new smartphone or tablet could cost more in the coming months with the recent rocketing in price of the memory chips they rely on.

DRAM semiconductors rose 16% after a fire damaged the factory of the world's biggest producer SK Hynix.

The company said on Sunday it had partially resumed operations at its Chinese plant, which produces almost 15% of global DRAM chips.

Speaking to BBC World, Technology Analyst Chris Green explained how "any disruption that lasts for more than just a few days can have a massive impact".
