Indian inflation: How is it calculated?

India's inflation rose unexpectedly last month to a six-month-high, data showed Monday.

The annual rate of inflation hit 6.1% in August - up from 5.79% in July.

Analysts had expected inflation to be broadly in line with July's level.

The figure is based on the wholesale price index, rather than prices on the street, as Shilpa Kannan reports from Delhi.
