Marks and Spencer sales: What next?

Marks and Spencer has seen another fall in its clothing and homeware sales, with like-for-like sales down 2.1%.

Retail Week magazine editor, George McDonald, believes the company must invest in online retail if it is to compete with its high street rivals.

Mr McDonald told BBC Radio 5 live's Wake Up to Money: "If you look at Next which was a great success over Christmas, their strength online is one of the things that's helping them out."

Chief executive Marc Bolland blamed an "exceptionally unseasonal October" for the quarterly results, but insisted there were "early signs" of improvement in sales of women's clothes.
