Contract bridge 'not a sport', rules tax tribunal
A tax tribunal has ruled that contact bridge is a game rather than a sport, after the English Bridge Union lost its legal challenge.
A ruling in the union's favour would have seen members no longer needing to pay VAT on competition entry fees.
Mike Warburton of accountants Grant Thornton explained the judge's view that contract bridge would need a significant degree of "physical activity" in order to be considered a sport.
