Working mother: 'A challenge to reduce wasted food'

One of the biggest wasters of food in the developed world is the consumer at home, with European households throwing away over 100 million tonnes of food a year - 15% of that unopened.

That means an average family home will bin more than $1000 (£583) of food each year. So why are consumers wasting so much?

Recent research suggests that some people are confused by best before date labels. Reports also say that better storage advice on packs and more forward planning by the consumer could cut waste - and save money.

Tara Sherbrooke, a working mother with two children, lives in London. She says she tries hard to keep her waste to a minimum, but it is a challenge.
