Osborne: Northern cities should be 'better connected'

Five cities in the north of England have unveiled a £15bn plan to improve road and rail connections in the region.

The joint One North report includes plans for a new 125mph intercity rail link, faster connections and better access to ports and airports.

Speaking on BBC Radio 4's Today programme, Chancellor George Osborne said northern cities should be brought together and be "better connected".

He added that if north of England's GDP grew at the average UK GDP rate, "we'd add more than £50bn to the economy by 2030".

First broadcast on BBC Radio 4's Today programme on Tuesday 5 August.
