When Rio was awarded the 2016 Olympic Games in 2009, Brazil was a soaring emerging economy. But as the Games finally kick off, the country is in a dire financial situation.

What was supposed to be a celebration of Brazil's arrival among the global economic elite is turning out to be a financial challenge amidst a tough recession that may only ease in late 2017.
