Are school admission systems fair?

Schools should be required to take equal numbers of pupils of different academic abilities to help poorer students succeed, according to a leading children's charity.

Barnado's says the poorest children are losing out in the race for a place at the best schools.

It claims its proposal, known as "fair-banding", could reduce social segregation within the schools system.

Fewer pupils from poor homes get into England's top schools, partly because their parents are less able to navigate the admission system, Barnardo's says.
