Plan for wealthy students to fund poor is shelved

The government has backtracked on the idea of allowing wealthy students to pay extra money for university places as a way of freeing up other places for poorer students.

The idea, which was being floated on Tuesday morning, would have meant some students from rich families could have paid up to £28,000 a year for a place.

But the idea was suddenly shelved.
