New national curriculum 'to make languages compulsory from seven'

Learning a foreign language will be compulsory from the age of seven in England's primary schools, in an overhaul of the national curriculum to be unveiled by the education secretary.

Michael Gove will also say that children as young as five will be expected to learn and recite poetry when he announces the government's plans next week.
