Primary school places: '200 applicants for 90 places'

Two in five council areas in England will not have enough primary school places for the number of children by September 2016, council leaders have warned.

The Local Government Association (LGA) said pressure from a rising population was reaching a "tipping point".

Speaking to BBC Breakfast, head teacher Anne Lyons, from St John Fisher Catholic Primary School, said: "Every school has been asked to expand (in her local authority area)".

"We have 90 places to offer and we have about 200 applicants each year", she added.
