Election 2015: Ed Miliband defends rent control plans

Ed Miliband has defended his party's plans to introduce restrictions on private rents in England if it wins the general election in May.

Labour's proposals would see rents capped to stop them rising above inflation, as well as the extension of the typical tenancy agreement from a year or less to three years, following a probationary period of six months.

Mr Miliband told the Andrew Marr Show that Britain was "almost unique" in its approach to tenancies and insisted that his plans would not prompt landlords to raise rents prior to the rules coming into effect.
