Meet the Author: Kate Colquhoun

One night in 1864 a respectable banker, Thomas Briggs, was travelling back from the City of London to his home in Hackney when he was brutally assaulted and killed.

It was the first murder ever carried out on a railway train in Britain, and it caused a sensation.

Now the story of his death, and the investigation which followed it, is the subject of a new book, Mr Briggs' Hat by Kate Colquhoun.

Nick Higham went to meet the author and see the places and documents that helped her tell the story.
