The enduring appeal of the power ballad

The way we access and listen to music has changed dramatically in the last decade.

But in these uncertain times, one classic type of song has not lost its appeal: The power ballad.

As a genre, it is almost bafflingly diverse - one commercially available compilation album finds room to include REM's scathingly bitter The One I Love alongside ludicrous cheese like Meat Loaf's I'd Do Anything For Love (But I Won't Do That).

In essence, however, a power ballad is a mixture of traditional love song and rock anthem.

BBC News went to a sold-out night at London's Scala venue to speak to Flash and Dave, two of the five friends who together organise Ultimate Power, a night devoted to the power ballad.

Could they, and their audience, explain what a power ballad is, and where the appeal lies?
