Lifetime award for director Stephen Frears

He became a national treasure in 2006 when he directed Helen Mirren in The Queen, but Stephen Frears is also the man behind films like Dangerous Liasons, High Fidelity and Mrs Henderson Presents.

Most of his early directing career was spent in television mainly for the BBC. It was his production of the Hanif Kureishi screenplay My Beautiful Laundrette for Channel 4 in 1985 that led to Frears becoming a household name.

This weekend the 70-year-old director receives a Lifetime Achievement Award from the European Film Academy in Berlin.

He spoke to Emma Jones.
