What makes a work of art an icon?

Arts Editor Will Gompertz explores what makes a work of art into an icon.

He says Picasso's Les Demoiselles d'Avignon (The Young Ladies of Avignon) was once derided by the artistic community.

But when Picasso became famous his art was re-evaluated and the painting was recently voted the most influential artwork in the world.

Our correspondent says the difference between art and an icon is simply....fame.
