Fifty Shades of Grey film 'couldn't get big stars'

The two lead roles in the film adaption of Fifty Shades of Grey will be played by Charlie Hunnam and Dakota Johnson, it has been revealed.

The actors have been described by the book's author EL James as "gorgeous, talented, lovely," but some fans have expressed disappointment with the casting.

Kate Muir, film critic for The Times, says she suspects the actors were not the production team's first choice.

"I think they did try for big stars, and couldn't get them because of the slightly toxic nature of the material," she said.

Lucy Bevan, a casting director, said: "I think it's really exciting that Dakota Johnson, who is not very well known yet, is playing the lead role."

First broadcast on BBC Radio 4's Today programme on Thursday 5 September 2013.
