Jung Chang is best known around the world for Wild Swans, the story of three generations of women in her family, which put a human face on the turmoil of 20th Century China.
In her latest book, Empress Dowager Cixi: The Concubine Who Launched Modern China, she has turned to the woman who had a most formidable reputation but who, perhaps more than any one individual, helped pull 19th Century China towards the modern age.
