JK Rowling's distress over children in institutions

JK Rowling has spoken of her distress while visiting children living in institutions, which her own charity campaigns against.

The Harry Potter author chose the topic to feature in an edition of BBC Radio 4's Woman's Hour, which she will guest edit on Monday.

Her charity, Lumos, works to end the systematic institutionalisation of children across Europe and she told Woman's Hour presenter Jane Garvey her first hand experience was very hard to cope with.

Woman's Hour Takeover sees JK Rowling, Kelly Holmes, Naomi Alderman, Doreen Lawrence and Lauren Laverne each curate one edition of the show this week.
