Mauritshuis reopens: The Hague's Royal Picture Gallery

The Mauritshuis, a gallery in The Hague which is home to Johannes Vermeer's famous Girl With A Pearl Earring, has re-opened after a two year renovation.

A selection of the gallery's collection went on a tour throughout that time; it included the Vermeer classic and Carel Fabritius' The Goldfinch, which was the inspiration for Donna Tart's novel of the same name.

The director of the Mauritshuis, Emilie Gordenker, explains why these and other paintings in the collection are so popular.
