Samuel Johnson prize winner Helen Macdonald 'felt rage'

The Samuel Johnson Prize for non-fiction writing has been won by H is for Hawk by Helen Macdonald, the first time the award has been given to a memoir in its 16-year history.

It tells the story of how the death of Helen's father triggered her to follow a childhood dream and become a falconer.

Ms Macdonald opened up to the Today Programme's Sarah Montague about the memoir, saying that her father's death caused her to "feel a lot of rage" that she was unable to express, and that her solution was to "express it through the hawk".

She described the writing of the memoir as a "spiritual journey".

First broadcast on BBC Radio 4's Today programme on November 5 2014.
