UK's first 'saviour sibling' treats sister

The first treatment involving a so-called 'saviour sibling' has been carried out in the UK.

Max Matthews was conceived through IVF to be a genetically selected match suitable to transplant bone marrow to his sister Megan, who suffers from fanconi anaemia.

The rare genetic disease meant that before the operation Megan needed weekly hospital visits for blood and platelet transfusions.

Megan and Max's mother, Katie Matthews, said she always wanted another child and insuring that he could help his sister has made a "huge difference" to Megan's life.
