GP led consortia could improve patient care says doctor

Government plans to give GPs in England control over how NHS funds are spent have attracted broad criticism on Monday from professional bodies.

The Royal College of GPs, the British Medical Association (BMA) and a number of trade unions say the upheaval is unnecessary and have advocated an incremental approach to reform instead.

However, Dr Paul Zollinger-Read, who led a trial consortium in Cambridgeshire says the changes could lead to reduced hospital referrals and a service more focussed on quality and patient care.
