NHS to benefit from military techniques at new centre

A ground-breaking research centre which shares medical techniques employed on the battlefield with doctors working on the NHS has opened in Birmingham.

The National Institute of Health Research will allow military and civilian surgeons and scientists to share expertise and research. It is hoped it will boost survival rates for military personnel and civilians.

The centre is based at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, where personnel injured in Afghanistan are treated.

Mark Worthington spoke to Prof Sir Keith Porter who runs the military wing at the hospital, and Prof Paul Stewart from Birmingham University about the potential benefits.
