Training to be a dementia carer

A new training initiative is helping dementia carers empathise with those they look after.

Goggles that distort vision, gloves that reduce the sense of touch and being fed by a colleague, give those in the workshop a sense of frustration, confusion and loss of control.

These feelings of what it might be like to have dementia make those at the workshop reflect on how best to care for those with this irreversible disease.

Care UK, which provides health and social care services, has developed and piloted the scheme in nine of its care homes. They hope to roll out the training across the UK.
