Archive: 1962 smokers not worried by cancer link

This week marks the 50th anniversary of the landmark report by the Royal College of Physicians which conclusively linked smoking to lung cancer.

"Smoking and Health" was published in March 1962, warning that smokers were significantly less likely to reach the age of 65 than non-smokers.

On the day of the report's publication, BBC reporter Christopher Brasher asked smokers whether it would make them likely to give up the habit.

First broadcast 7 March 1962.
