Hopes and fears of pioneering heart op patient Carl Jordan

A pioneering medical technique aimed at helping to improve the life expectancy of patients with heart failure is set to begin in Liverpool.

Surgeons will fit a device that is similar to a pacemaker, in the hope that by electrically stimulating one of the nerves leading to the heart, it will stop the heart enlarging and thus reverse the worsening symptoms.

The technique has been shown to keep rats and dogs alive for longer.

Former paramedic Carl Jordan is the first human to undergo the surgery. Here he talks about living with heart failure and his hopes and fears for the operation.
