NHS 111 sees 'significant improvements'

NHS England is expected to say that the controversial NHS 111 service has made '"significant improvements" since its poor performance during the Easter weekend when the service was launched.

It has anecdotal evidence about its performance over the bank holiday weekend across the country.

On Sunday, the Independent newspaper reported an unpublished survey of GPs in the North East - one of the areas where NHS 111 was first piloted - revealing widespread concerns about clinical failings and "terrible" communication.

Jane Cummings, chief nursing officer at NHS England, told the Today programme's Justin Webb that there has "certainly been some improvements" in the 111 service since Easter across the "vast majority" of England.

First broadcast on BBC Radio 4's Today programme on Tuesday 7 May 2013.
