Patients can have faith in the 111 service, the chief executive of NHS England has said, despite a major provider trying to pull out of the non-emergency telephone service.

NHS Direct initially won 11 of the 46 regional contracts for the service, covering 34% of the population. It has already pulled out of two services, but the remaining nine are now "financially unsustainable".

The 111 service had "very significant problems" at Easter, Dame Barbara Hakin admitted, and there is "much more work to do" on it.
