Deaf woman hears for first time after cochlear implant

The moment a woman - who has been deaf since birth - hears for the first time has been captured on film.

Joanne Milne from Gateshead also began to lose her vision in her 20s because of the rare medical condition Usher Syndrome.

Last month she was fitted with cochlear implants during a procedure at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham.

The moment when she heard nurse Louise Craddock listing the days of the week was filmed on a mobile phone.

Speaking on BBC Radio 5 live's Victoria Derbyshire programme with help from her mother Ann, Joanne said: "I could hear what she was saying and it was amazing."

"It's just amazing and emotional to hear my family's voices because as somebody who is deaf everybody has sounded the same to me."
