Chikungunya virus hits Dominican Republic

The Caribbean has been hit hard by the painful, mosquito-borne disease chikungunya.

Far from its usual home of Africa and Asia, it is the first time it has been spread locally on this side of the world.

The sharp increase in the number of cases here - to more than a quarter of a million - has raised fears that it will spread throughout the Americas.

Lorena Arroyo reports from the Dominican Republic, home to half of all the Caribbean cases.
