Surgeons try to reduce use of instruments

Doctors across the UK are being told they have an ethical duty to prevent waste in the NHS.

A report by the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges points to potential cost savings of nearly £2bn through better use of tests, medication, hospital beds and operating theatres.

Surgeons at the Royal Throat, Nose and Ear Hospital in London have already made savings by reducing the number of tools used in operations.

Consultant Jeremy Lavy explains how he and his colleagues decided to reduce waste.
