UK could be first country to allow 'three parent babies'

The UK has announced plans to be the first country to allow a technique which helps prevent genetic disease and produces so-called "three parent babies".

It helps prevent diseases caused by genetic faults in the mitochondria, which are found in human cells and generate energy.

The nucleus of the fertilised egg is removed from the cell and put into an egg cell from another women, which has healthy mitochondria.

It can help prevent some fatal genetic disorders but has generated some controversy.
