'We fail to capitalise on the great NHS' - Lord Carter

Up to £5bn a year could be saved by the NHS in England by improving staff organisation and a better approach to purchasing everyday items, according to a report.

Lord Carter, who is a Labour peer, was asked by the Health Secretary to examine how hospitals could be more efficient.

His recommendations include better management of staff leave and improved procurement of medicines and equipment.
