Unearthing the secrets of Australia's 'hidden shoes'

Researchers in Australia have published the results of a six-year study into the historic practice of hiding clothing in buildings, probably to ward off evil spirits.

They found items in more than 100 buildings. They date back to the 18th and early 19th Centuries, and it is thought they were hidden by immigrants who feared their families might be at risk from the spirits.

The artefacts, which tend to come to light during modern-day renovations, include everything from children's shoes to hats. They have been found at sites ranging from old houses to the Sydney Harbour Bridge.
